Make learning English part of your everyday life! Read our top tips here!
Watch films as a way to familiarize yourself with authentic language.
Try watching a film you have already watched in your own language in English, using subtitles too. Does this sound boring? Maybe, but you’ll feel great when you start to understand dialogues and situations you couldn’t understand before. Not convinced yet? Well, how about taking advantage of the digital age we live in?
Listen to audiobooks, podcasts, music, TV shows, etc.
You have a great variety of sources to choose from so, if you take a little time to search, you will find something you like or something that interests you . Remember: the more you listen the more your speaking skills will improve.
Change the language of your gadgets!
You probably have a cell phone or a smartphone or a tablet. Why not change the display language into English? Also for the games that you play, your browser, your apps. You’ll get familiar with words and expressions commonly used for everyday devices.
Label everything!
Label items around you, at home, at work wherever you can. You may think this is funny, but for some students it works very well. It also helps you to build associations. Let’s say you’ve labelled your microwave oven, you can also add turn on / turn off – control panel – door safety lock, etc. So you learn more than the standard objects. This helps you to remember these specific words in context.
Speak with as many people as you can!
Most students want to speak with other English speaking students or even native speakers. This may be your case too. What can you do? Join voiced chats, talk to your classmates in English when you are not in class. You can even make a group to play games, have a meal or just chat together over a cup of coffee or a beer.
Write down your “to do” lists in English!
Do you write down reminders or shopping lists? Try writing them in your target language. Writing down these basic tasks will help you remember some of the more relevant phrases in your daily routine.
Read short stories!
You like reading, but you feel you won’t understand a novel or a long book? Try comics, short stories – even kids’ books, magazines, anything you can get your hands on! Reading is very important to enlarge your vocabulary and to understand how phrases and expressions are used in English.
In this way you are practicing all the skills you need to start mastering a language so, no more excuses! Start right away and enjoy your learning!!
